#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: Its all about ‘ Politicians Saying They Want Safer Streets From Antisocial Crime ‘ & More Strikes as Kindness & Love XX says only a few days to end of this year 🙏🙏’s for better 2023 O Lord Thy God Amen

The Times front page
Some of the front pages lead with stories about pledges to reduce crime in the UK. The Times reports that Labour has declared itself the party of law and order and promised to deal with antisocial behaviour. Recent government figures released under Freedom of Information requests show that nearly two million reports of antisocial behaviour have gone unattended by police over the last three years, as Labour vows to give victims the ability to decide how people are punished.
Daily Express front page
Using similar rhetoric to the opposition, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said he will make the UK’s streets “safe for everybody” after a series of deaths over Christmas, the Daily Express reports. The paper says the Mr Sunak will make sure police forces have the resources after Britain was “rocked by a wave” of “violence”, including the killings of Elle Edwards in Merseyside and Cody Fisher in Birmingham.
The i front page
Meanwhile, the i reports unions are looking at boycotting pay review negations next year, with the new leader of the Trades Union Congress questioning their independence and credibility. Paul Nowak tells the paper that the system is under threat of collapsing, amid Mr Sunak’s insistence that a “fair agreement” for workers should not involve pay rises above 10%.
Daily Telegraph front page
The Daily Telegraph says it has obtained a leaked draft of a review into the government’s flagship anti-terrorism Prevent strategy, which the paper claims has found taxpayers’ money is being given to “groups promoting Islamic extremism”. The paper says the scheme, which is meant to promote deradicalisation, is alleged to have given money to groups who “supported the Taliban” and other extremists. The author of the review declined to comment on the Telegraph’s claims, while the government said the report will be published “in due course”.
Financial Times front page
Energy giant Exxon Mobil has launched legal action against the EU to block its plans to put a windfall tax on oil company profits, is the lead story in the Financial Times. The paper reports the company is challenging the bloc’s right to impose a tax, as this is a power historically reserved for countries, as well as its use of emergency powers to secure EU member states’ approval for the levy.
Daily Mail front page
Under the headline “Have Tories given up on cutting tax?”, The Daily Mail reports a major Treasury review into the tax system has been “quietly ditched” by the government. Insiders tell the paper that the review designed to make Britain more competitive has been scrapped by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt ahead of the Budget in March.
The Sun front page
The Sun leads with reports that civil servants have been given around £30m in gift cards to spend in shops and restaurants. The paper says the tokens – which were handed out amid a government pay freeze – were given for good performances, despite half of them working from home and “huge failings in Whitehall departments”.
Daily Mirror front page
The Daily Mirror reports that 1,000 new defibrillators – devices to help people in cardiac arrest – will be placed in public spaces around the UK. The paper says the £1m fund to place them in places like shops, parks and post offices has been described by campaigners as giving “the best chance of saving lives”.
The Daily Star
The Daily Star’s front page focuses on police in Mexico finding a tiger cub in the back of a car pulled over for a “routine traffic offence”. Describing the animal as “Puss in boot”, the paper carries an image of the young predator hidden among designer suitcases and with a dog collar on.
New TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak

Comments by the new head of the Trades Union Congress Paul Nowak and other union leaders feature on several front pages.

In an interview with the i, Mr Nowak said unions were considering pulling out of pay review bodies which are to discuss salary offers in the spring. He said he was worried about the credibility of such bodies, because although the government says they are independent, they must act within the “envelope” set by ministers. Mr Nowak added this had led to the below-inflation pay offers this year.

The Times highlights a warning from Mark Serwotka, the general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) which represents civil servants, that unions could co-ordinate, synchronise and escalate strikes. The paper says it’s been told by a PCS source that it was in talks with other unions.

In an editorial, the Daily Star accuses the government of not treating the most widespread industrial action in a generation with the seriousness it deserves. The paper urges Rishi Sunak “to do something to convince us that he is on the side of ordinary folk, and not just his rich mates”.

The Daily Telegraph reports that an independent review of Prevent, the government’s deradicalisation programme, has found that taxpayers’ money has been handed to groups promoting Islamist extremism. Citing the unpublished report, the paper says key figures in organisations which have benefited from the scheme have supported the Taliban and defended militant Islamist bodies banned in the UK. In a statement issue to the paper, the government said the report will be published “in due course”.

According to the Guardian, more than half of residential homes for people with dementia that were inspected this year have been rated inadequate or requiring improvements, up from less than a third before the Covid pandemic. The paper says inspections uncovered often shocking failings such as people left in bed for months, pain medicines not administered, violence between residents and malnutrition.

Under the headline “Sneaky Nandos”, the Sun says Whitehall bosses avoided a government pay freeze and rewarded staff for good performance with up to £100 in gift cards for shops and restaurants. The paper says civil servants received the treat even though half of them worked from home and there were huge failings in some departments.

“Have Tories given up on cutting tax?” Asks the Daily Mail. The paper says a major Treasury review of the tax system, ordered by Kwasi Kwarteng when he was chancellor, has now been “quietly ditched” by his successor Jeremy Hunt. In an editorial, the paper accuses Mr Hunt of “embracing the big state Treasury orthodoxy which is hostile to his party’s fundamental values”.

The Times reports that Labour is promising a crackdown on anti-social behaviour if it wins the next election. The party is planning to increase the use of community sentences – such as clearing wasteland or removing graffiti – and to set up community payback boards to make sure offenders do the work. In an editorial, the paper says the pledge by shadow justice secretary Steve Reed is aimed at convincing voters that Labour, rather than the Conservatives, should be seen as the party of law and order.
