A number of Friday’s papers lead with reports that a top QC will deliver a “devastating blow” to an investigation by MPs into Boris Johnson. The Daily Mail cites a senior source as confirming Lord Pannick will say the way MPs are conducting the so-called Partygate inquiry risks endangering democracy. The Commons privileges committee has threatened to punish Mr Johnson even if he only inadvertently misled Parliament over gatherings at No 10 during lockdown, the paper says.The Daily Express reports that the verdict that the Partygate probe into allegations Boris Johnson misled Parliament could “paralyse democracy” comes from one of Mr Johnson’s fiercest opponents. Police also revealed the nine-year-old’s killer used two guns. “Covid-style tax breaks for firms facing ruin” is the main headline on the front of the Times, as it reports on the chancellor drawing up an emergency strategy for the new prime minister to help businesses facing bankruptcy because of rising energy costs.
It quotes Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi as saying the government could “learn lessons” from the pandemic, and introduce targeted reductions in VAT and business rates to help the retail and hospitality sectors.
The i Newspaper says it has seen a leaked draft of a letter the industry body, Energy UK, is preparing to send whoever is appointed chancellor by either Liz Truss or Rishi Sunak next week, which it says includes calls for the VAT on companies’ energy bills to be scrapped.
The Daily Mail and The Sun are among several papers to have heard from a source that Cabinet Office legal advice, which is due to be published later, will deal a “devastating” blow to the Boris Johnson Partygate inquiry.
The Express says the “damning verdict” of the QC Lord Pannick is that democracy could be “paralysed” by the way MPs are investigating whether or not the prime minister misled Parliament.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the average earnings of most family doctors in England rose by £20,000 to £142,000 in the 12 months after the first coronavirus lockdown. It points out that the figure includes private work, and extra payments for administering Covid vaccines.
But the paper says patient groups found the rise “difficult to justify” as face-to-face appointments had been routinely restricted because of the pandemic. The Department of Health says GPs made a “vital” contribution to the vaccination rollout.
The Daily Mirror describes the gunman who murdered nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel at her home in Liverpool as a “coward”. The main photo on its front page is a CCTV image released by Merseyside Police, showing the man fleeing the scene, wearing trainers with distinctive white soles.
