Many of the papers lead with the onstage stabbing in New York of author Sir Salman Rushdie, who since a 1989 fatwa issued by the then-Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, has been subject to death threats over his novel The Satanic Verses. The Daily Mirror reports that the 75-year-old was stabbed several times by a “heavy-set attacker” and that a suspect was in custody on Friday night.
The headline in the Express reads: "Salman Rushdie stabbed in frenzied attack on stage"
The Daily Express describes the incident as a “frenzied attack” and, using his full title, reports that Sir Salman suffered “serious neck wounds”.
The headline in the Telegraph reads: "Rushdie stabbed at literary festival"
Sir Salman is described as having “spent 30 years living under [the] shadow” of the fatwa by the Daily Telegraph. The paper says the author was airlifted to hospital following the attack and quotes New York Governor Kathy Hochul saying he is “getting the care he needs”.
The headline in the Sun reads: "Rushdie stabbed in neck".
The Sun carries a picture of the scene following the attack, in which four men can be seen giving the author assistance immediately after the attack.
The headline in the Guardian reads: "Rushdie stabbed onstage at event in New York".
The stabbing came just before 11am local time as Sir Salman prepared to give a lecture, the Guardian reports. The paper adds that the incident has “prompted worldwide condemnation as an attack on free speech”.
The headline in the Times reads: "Rushdie stabbed up to 15 times in on-stage attack"
The Times reports Sir Salman was stabbed up to 15 times by a masked man dressed in black, prompting gasps and shouts from members of the 2,500-strong audience, and that he had been due to speak about the US being a haven for persecuted writers.
The headline in the Mail reads: "Rushdie stabbed 'up to 15 times'".
The Daily Mail carries a front page picture of the man named by New York State Police as the suspected attacker, 24-year-old Hadi Matar.
The headline in the i reads: "Drought will shrink UK's food crops"
The i leads with a warning that the drought declared for parts of England will shrink the country’s food crops, including key crops like potatoes and maize. The paper says a third of rivers are now running “exceptionally dry” and that a lack of water will lead to lower yields and smaller vegetables in supermarkets.
The Star reports that rivers that are home to beavers are less likely to dry up.
Some “unexpected good news” about the drought leads the Daily Star. The paper says the country’s rivers are less likely to dry up if they are home to beavers and the papers suggests “these furry favourites could be the answer to our problems”.
The headline in the Financial Times reads: "Debt payment and welfare bill set to soar"
And the Financial Times reports that the cost of servicing the UK’s debt and paying its welfare bill is set to soar by £50bn in the next financial year because of rising inflation and interest rates. The paper says the additional payments will “leave the new Tory leader hoping tax revenues remain strong” at a time when the Bank of England is expecting the economy to fall into recession.

Many of the papers picture author Sir Salman Rushdie receiving first aid after he was attacked onstage at an event in New York on Friday.

The Daily Mail says the author was stabbed up to 15 times, while the Daily Express calls the attack “frenzied”. The Times quotes a woman who was in the front row and who told the New York Times that five men were needed to remove the suspect, who she describes as “furious” and “intensely strong.”

An usher at the event tells the Daily Mirror that security was “lax”, while the Daily Mail suggests there was anger among some in the hall that the writer was not given better protection. A retired lawyer tells The Sun that the security at the event – a single state trooper – was “totally inadequate.”

The Guardian says there has been “worldwide condemnation” of the stabbing as an “attack on free speech”. The Daily Telegraph notes that Iran’s state broadcaster welcomed the assault and proclaimed that the fatwa against him is still valid.

The i focuses on the drought declared in the UK, saying it will “shrink [the] UK’s food crops”. The Independent says UK food supplies could be threatened for more than a year. The Guardian says farmers have criticised water companies for what it calls “dithering” over imposing hosepipe bans.

According to calculations by the Financial Times, the cost of servicing the UK’s debt and paying its welfare bill is set to soar by £50bn in the next financial year because of rising inflation and interest rates.

The Guardian is one of a number of papers reporting that tens of thousands of A-level students risk missing out on a place at their preferred university because of a sharp fall in top grades. A professor from Exeter University tells The Times that “this year will be the hardest admissions round in living memory.”

As people prepare for rising energy bills this winter, the Daily Telegraph suggests one trade is benefiting – that of the chimney sweep. An industry body says it’s been one of the busiest periods for sweeps, with most being fully booked until the autumn.
