The Daily Mirror joins the majority of Tuesday’s newspapers in picturing iconic singer and actress Olivia Newton-John, who has died aged 73, on its front page. The paper reports she passed away peacefully at her ranch in southern California in the US on Monday, with her Grease co-star John Travolta leading the tributes to her life and career.Tensions are rising in Liz Truss’ campaign to be the next prime minister over what should be done to help people with the growing cost of living crisis, reports the i. A source in the foreign secretary’s camp tells the paper that Tory MPs want her to be “more pragmatic and less ideological”, amid warnings more targeted help for low earners will be needed. The Guardian reports on warnings that Liz Truss’ emergency tax cut plans could cost more than £50bn a year and “fail to help the worst-off deal with the rising cost of living”. The paper says her rival, former chancellor Rishi Sunak, “threw down the gauntlet” by announcing he would build on the existing £15bn package of support measures – contrasting them with Ms Truss’ reluctance to commit to benefit increases or further rebates.Ms Truss’ plans for an emergency budget to slash taxes would be an “electoral suicide note”, according to comments from deputy PM and Sunak-backer Dominic Raab in the Times. Mr Raab argues in the paper her proposals would damage the living standards of millions and subject the party to “impotent oblivion” at the next election. The Daily Express carries a more “positive” view of Liz Truss’ campaign, reporting she has insisted she is on the side of people who work hard as part of a “bold economic vision” for the UK. The paper adds Ms Truss has also made clear she believes “Britain’s best days are ahead of us”.The Metro leads with the start of the trial of footballer Ryan Giggs for alleged domestic abuse. A jury heard he headbutted his girlfriend Kate Greville, as part of a “litany of abuse” he subjected her to over a three year period, the paper says. Giggs’ lawyers have said the case against him was based on “distortion, exaggeration and lies”.The Daily Star also leads with the first day of the Giggs trial, reporting the court heard he allegedly headbutted Ms Greville after “she said she was leaving him for cheating”. The paper notes prosecutors described the former Manchester United winger’s on-pitch skills as a “thing of beauty”, in stark contrast to the “much uglier and more sinister side to his character” at home.Large portions of the UK are experiencing their driest year since 1976 and some hosepipe bans are expected to last until October, according to the Daily Telegraph. The paper reports that a new heat-health alert has been issued for this week, with temperatures expected to rise to about 35C (95F) in parts of the country.Police checks on foreign nationals from 44 countries have been scrapped, the Daily Mail reports in its lead story. Tens of thousands of people, including those from Russia, China and Iran, no longer have to give their details to the police when moving to the UK, after the government “abruptly” scrapped the checks at the end of last week “with no public announcement”, the paper says.
“The one that we loved”, is the Daily Mirror’s tribute to actress and singer Olivia Newton-John who has died at the age of 73. Images of the late star appear on most of Tuesday’s front pages.
The Daily Mail features comments from her Grease co-star John Travolta who described Newton-John as “incredible”.
The Guardian reveals that the pair’s portrayal of Danny and Sandy in 1978 film almost did not happen – because Newton-John thought she was too old at 29 to be playing a high school senior.
“Britain’s best days are ahead of us”, is the message from the Conservative leadership contender Liz Truss in an interview with the Daily Express.
Setting out her economic vision, Ms Truss says she is “on the side” of people who work hard. But according to an expert from the Institute for Fiscal Studies quoted in the Guardian, her tax and spending plans “basically don’t do much for those” who are “struggling most to cope”.
“Hosepipe bans could last until October amid a new heatwave”, warns the Times. The timescale is based on modelling from Southern Water, which has already imposed curbs on Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.
The Daily Telegraph reports that ministers are set to announce an official drought this week. The paper says the move will put pressure on other water companies to bring in hosepipe bans.
However companies in Bristol, Portsmouth and Affinity Water, which supplies Greater London, have all said that restrictions will not be necessary this year, the paper notes.
