The headline in the Sunday Times reads 'Sunak pledges billions more to ease crisis'
A number of Sunday’s papers lead with fresh promises from the Tory leadership candidates. The Sunday Times reports that Rishi Sunak has pledged to introduce another multibillion-pound package to help ease the cost of living crisis, saying the country faces a stark choice between “clear-eyed realism and starry-eyed boosterism”. The paper reports the former chancellor said it was “wrong” of his leadership rival Liz Truss to rule out further direct support for households this winter.
The headline in the Sunday Telegraph reads 'Hosepipes must be banned now, says minister'
The Sunday Telegraph says Liz Truss plans to “rush through tax cuts” up to six months earlier than planned as the Foreign Secretary pledged to “look at what more can be done” to tackle the rising cost of living. The paper also reports that millions of households across the south of England could be hit with hosepipe bans within days after the environment secretary urged more water companies to introduce urgent restrictions.
The headline in the Observer reads 'Set emergency budget or risk a winter of dire poverty: ex-PM'
Writing in the Observer, former Prime Minister Gordon Brown has said that Boris Johnson and the Tory leadership candidates should agree an immediate emergency budget tackling the spiralling cost of living, or risk “condemning millions of vulnerable and blameless children and pensioners to a winter of dire poverty”.
The headline in the Sunday Express reads 'Rishi vows to jail child groomers for life'
The Sunday Express says that Rishi Sunak has pledged to crack down on child grooming gangs by “locking up offenders for life”. The paper says the former chancellor blamed “political correctness” for the “country’s failure to get to grips” with the crime. Along with several other papers, the Express also carries a picture of 12-year-old Archie Battersbee, who has died after a legal battle between his parents and doctors.
The headline in the Sunday People reads 'Britain faces eco meltdown'
The Sunday People reports that environmental activists are planning a mass protest as a heatwave looms across Britain.
The headline in the Sunday Mirror reads "TikTok pervs groom schoolgirls in sick 'sugar daddy' craze"
The Sunday Mirror reports that schoolgirls are “being paid by perverts” to pose in their uniforms on a popular video app.
The headline in the Sun on Sunday reads 'Cruel Becky
The Sun on Sunday focuses on the aftermath of the “Wagatha Christie” libel case – reporting that one of the parties in the case, Rebekah Vardy, is facing criticism from friends of her former agent.
The headline in the Daily Star reads 'Hi-de-Hi Su: BBC comedy so low-de-low
And the Daily Star says that Su Pollard, star of 1980s TV hit Hi-de-Hi, “is not a happy camper” after she “put the boot in” on BBC comedy bosses for “not giving us any funny sitcoms for hard times”.

According to the Sun on Sunday, the gloves have come off in the Conservative leadership race as Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak attack each other over their economic plans.

Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, Ms Truss says she would use an emergency budget next month to reverse the recent National Insurance rise and suspend the green levy on energy bills. She adds she would look at what more could be done.

The foreign secretary gets the backing of the Telegraph – which, in its editorial, describes her as the “first truly philosophy-driven leader since Margaret Thatcher”.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Times says Rishi Sunak has pledged another multi-billion pound package of direct support to people struggling to pay their bills. He told the paper Ms Truss was wrong to concentrate on tax cuts and rule out handouts to those on low incomes, including pensioners.

Interviewed in the Times, the former chancellor seems unperturbed by his under-dog status. He is not giving up, he says, and plans to “love-bomb” the Tory membership – one-by-one if necessary.

According a report in the paper from the hustings in Cardiff and Eastbourne, the contest is “still all to play for”. It describes the voters as being “undecided, frustrated and split”.

But the Mail on Sunday says Cabinet supporters of Mr Sunak have been in secret talks with the Ms Truss about defecting to her camp as her poll lead lengthens.

Both contenders push more policies they would implement if they become prime minister. The Sunday Express reports with approval Mr Sunak’s plans to crack down on child grooming gangs.

The paper says all police forces will have to record the ethnicity of those involved. He is quoted as saying he will not let political correctness stop him from taking action.

The Sunday Express also gives prominence to Ms Truss’s pledge to do more to stop illegal crossings of the Channel in small boats.

On that issue, the Mail leads on what it says are figures from a leaked secret military intelligence report showing four in 10 migrants are from peaceful Albania where – as the paper puts it – there has not been a war for 25 years.

The Mail says nine criminal gangs are behind the crossings, used inflatable boats bought online from China. The paper describes the official document as the “clearest evidence yet” that the asylum system is being abused.
