The Times
Like several papers the Times leads on the possibility of a hosepipe ban across parts of the UK as the country faces drought. The paper says with temperatures set to go above 30C again millions more households are set to be banned from using hoses and sprinklers until further notice.
Daily Telegraph
The Daily Telegraph reports that a £250m water plant will be out of action until at least next year despite the UK experiencing record summer heat. The paper says the Thames Water desalination plant in Beckton, east London, was built to prevent thousands of households from experiencing the effects of drought. Senior industry sources have suggested the plant has been mothballed due to high running costs, the paper claims.
Daily Star
“Grass up a granny” declares the Daily Star. It says water companies want people to “spy on neighbours over hosepipe ban”, meaning grandmothers (and others) could face a £1,000 fine for watering their petunias.
Metro
The Metro says “it’s drought of order” as it reports that 20 million people are facing a hosepipe ban.
The Guardian
The Guardian leads on an investigation into an “insidious far-right ecosystem” which is targeting children in an attempt to radicalise them online. The paper says gaming forums, private chatrooms and online leaflets are among the platforms and tactics used by the groups.
Daily Mirror
The Daily Mirror’s headline is “End betrayal of our kids” as it says Commonwealth gold medallist Adam Peaty has blasted the Tory government over a lack of investment in sports facilities. It comes as the England Women football team is calling for all girls to be given the chance to play football following their Euro 2022 victory.
Daily Express
The Daily Express says there are fears soaring gas bills will push inflation to 15% – “plunging Britain deeper into the cost-of-living crisis.” It says mortgage rates are also set to rise, adding an extra £196 a month onto bills.
Daily Mail
The Daily Mail has an article from Attorney General Suella Braverman who, it says, has launched a fightback against “woke ‘witch trials’”. Ms Braverman, who ran for the Tory leadership, “brands the diversity industry a ‘new religion’ in which zealots seek to punish unbelievers while others are too scared to speak out”.
Financial Times
The Financial Times leads on a big story in the tech sector as it says SoftBank has raised $22bn in cash in deals which will reduce its stake in Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba over the coming years. The paper says the Japanese conglomerate has been hit by a downturn in the tech sector.
The Sun
The Sun continues with its coverage of the Wagatha Christie libel case as Rebekah Vardy tells of how her footballer husband Jamie received death threats over the trial.

The Times leads on a warning that more parts of the country could see the introduction of hosepipe bans after the driest July in decades, as weather forecasters predict there will be little respite for communities on the verge of drought.

It says another heatwave is expected next week, and temperatures are likely to rise above 30C (86F).

The Guardian says while some water firms have suggested they could bring in a hosepipe ban, other companies, even in drier areas, are resisting moving too early in order to prevent irritating customers.

According to Metro, the new restrictions in Kent and Sussex mean people are being urged to “grass on a neighbour” if they are seen flouting the ban

A hosepipe in a garden
Hosepipe bans could hit more areas, the papers warn, with some companies urging people to report neighbours seen flouting the rules

The Daily Telegraph reports that a Thames Water desalination plant in east London, built to protect hundreds of thousands of people from the effects of drought has been switched off until next year

The company says the facility is currently out of action for planned works. The paper also says that both candidates in the Conservative party leadership contest have vowed to “crack down” on the water industry. Statements from Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss say they would hold companies to account regarding leaks and the need to stop waste.

An investigation by the Guardian has found that children in the UK are being targeted by the far-right online in an attempt to radicalise them

Experts are also concerned that the age profiles of those being referred or arrested in connection with far-right extremism are getting progressively younger.
