The headline in the Metro reads: "Get ready for... hottest day ever"
Soaring temperatures across the UK continue to lead many of the papers. The Metro reports that the heatwave has brought school and airport closures, caused roads to melt, and forced hospitals to cancel operations. The paper says the highest temperature recorded on Monday was 38.1C, but the UK record of 38.7C set in July 2019 is expected to be broken on Tuesday.
The front page of the Star carries a picture of a policeman giving water to a member of the Queen's Guard outside Buckingham Palace beside the headline: "And you thought YOU were having a tough day?"
The Star is one of a number of papers to feature a picture of a policeman giving water to a member of the Queen’s Guard outside Buckingham Palace on Monday. The headline reads: “And you thought YOU were having a tough day?”
The headline in the Sun reads: "Britain is melting"
A close-up of one of the guards dominates the front page of the Sun. The paper says that Britain is “melting” and that temperatures on Tuesday could reach as high as 41C.
The headline in the Telegraph reads: "Record highs, travel chaos, schools close... and it's going to get hotter"
The Telegraph reports on warnings that the heatwave may leave emergency services unable to cope. The paper says that ambulance services are braced for a busy 24 hours and that temperatures were forecast to remain above 20C overnight – conditions which can be deadly for elderly and vulnerable people.
The headline in the Mirror reads: "Record baker"
The heatwave is set to return next month, according to the Mirror. The paper quotes one weather expert saying: “The brutality of the heat we’re expecting is astounding.”
The headline in the i reads: "Earth send a warning"
“Earth sends a warning”, reads the headline in the i. The paper reports that temperatures in Wales already exceeded the hottest on record on Monday, and quotes Prince Charles saying that the UK’s net zero decarbonising commitments have “never been more important”.
The headline in the Guardian reads: "Johnson accused of 'checking out' as Britain swelters in searing heat"
The Guardian says that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been accused of “checking out” after missing meetings of the government’s Cobra emergencies committee about the heatwave.
The headline in the Times reads: "Tory race thrown wide open"
The Conservative Party leadership race is now “wide open” as three of the four remaining candidates fight to secure a spot alongside Rishi Sunak in the final run-off, says the Times. In an interview with the paper, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss reportedly seeks to distance herself from the austerity of the Cameron years and vows to increase defence spending. But one of her supporters has told the paper that Monday was “not… a good night” as she came third in the latest round of voting by Tory MPs.
The headline in the Mail reads: "Mordaunt's No10 bid hits buffers"
The daily Mail says Trade minister Penny Mordaunt’s bid for No 10 has “dramatically stalled” after she won 82 votes in Monday’s vote, one down on the previous round. The paper says it could be any of the three women left in the race who secures a spot in the final round.
The headline in the Express reads: "Can Truss turn up heat to battle Rishi in run-off?"
Ms Truss could “overhaul second-placed hopeful Penny Mordaunt” in the next round of voting if the Tory right gets behind her, says the Daily Express. The paper quotes former Tory leader Iain Duncan-Smith saying: “This is all about momentum. Liz Truss has gone forward, Penny has stalled.”
The headline in the Financial Times reads: "Arm's London listing plan on hold after Johnson's fall sparks turmoil"
And the Financial Times reports that the listing of chip manufacturer Arm on the London Stock Exchange is on hold following the departure of Boris Johnson as prime minister. The paper says SoftBank, the Japanese holding company which owns Arm, had considered a share sale in London only because of strong incentives offered by the Johnson government, and that work on the offering has “in effect halted within the company”.

A number of the papers focus on the penultimate round of voting among Tory MPs in the party’s leadership election, set to take place on Tuesday evening.

The Times says the race has been “thrown wide open” after Kemi Badenoch and Liz Truss gained ground while Penny Mordaunt’s support slipped slightly in the last round.

The paper says the contest will “culminate in a clash between Mordaunt and Truss for second place” and that the key factor is likely to be who Ms Badenoch’s supporters shift their allegiance to if she’s eliminated.

The Daily Telegraph agrees, stating in its headline that Ms Badenoch is “poised to be kingmaker” as the contest reaches its crucial stages. On its front page, the Daily Express asks: “Can Truss turn up heat to battle Rishi in run-off?” It believes the foreign secretary, who won 71 votes in the latest ballot, up seven on the previous round, is now “gaining momentum”.

The Sun, like many of the other papers, leads with the heatwave gripping the UK, declaring that “Britain is melting”. It carries a close-up picture of one of the Queen’s guardsmen outside Buckingham Palace sweating under his bearskin hat. A similar image is on the front of the Daily Star, this time with a guardsman being given a drink of water while standing at his post. The headline reads: “And you thought YOU were having a bad day?”

A number of papers say Kemi Badenoch could become the “kingmaker” in the Tory leadership race

“Blowtorch Britain” is how the Daily Mirror sums up the situation. It predicts that temperatures today could reach 43C, something it describes as a “record baker”. But the Daily Mail is unsympathetic, condemning what it describes as “snowflake Britain” for panicking over a two-day heatwave. Its leader column asks: “Whatever happened to keep calm and carry on?”

The Guardian has a collection of photos of people across Britain dealing with the conditions in different ways. Some are enjoying a picnic sitting in the shallows of Loch Lomond, while a woman in Manchester is using a fan as a makeshift sun shade, and a man in Glasgow is seen simply pouring a bottle of water over his head.

Turning to to the political aspect of the story, the paper reports that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been accused of “checking out” after missing meetings of the government’s Cobra emergencies committee about the heatwave.

The online-only Independent focuses on a High Court judge’s rulingyesterday that the government has failed to spell out adequately how it would achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The campaigners who brought the case said the finding suggested the strategy was “illegal and inadequate”. But the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy is quoted saying: “The judge made no criticism about the substance of our plans, which are well on track”.

And the Financial Times reports that the listing of chip manufacturer Armon the London Stock Exchange is on hold following the departure of Boris Johnson as prime minister. The paper says SoftBank, the Japanese holding company which owns Arm, had considered a share sale in London only because of strong incentives offered by the Johnson government, and that work on the offering has “in effect halted within the company”.
