Claims the Prince of Wales has criticised the UK plan to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda is reported on Saturday’s front pages. The Daily Mail says Prince Charles has “privately condemned” the government’s scheme as “appalling”. The paper notes the reported comments come after the High Court ruled the first flight to Rwanda could go ahead and says prince is “risking a major clash with No 10”.

The Times also leads on Prince Charles’s supposed dislike for the Rwanda policy. It reports the heir to the throne is said to be “particularly frustrated” by the policy amid fears it could overshadow a Commonwealth summit in Rwanda, where he is due to represent the Queen. The Times says Clarence House did not deny Prince Charles was opposed to the policy but insisted the prince was not trying to influence the government and stressed he remains politically neutral.

Financial Times front page — “Johnson snubs food shake-up in bid to keep rightwingers on side” is the headline in the Financial Times. The paper reports ministers intend to ignore recommendations, including a tax on sugar and salt, as part of a review of England’s food strategy. The FT says the rejection of Leon restaurant chain founder Henry Dimbleby’s proposals is an attempt by Boris Johnson’s government to back away from policies perceived as “unconservative” or “anti-business”.

The Guardian claims a leaked version of the government’s food strategy white paper contains “virtually no fresh measures to tackle the soaring cost of food, childhood hunger, obesity or the climate emergency”. The paper notes despite Henry Dimbleby’s review, the government’s strategy makes few recommendations, and quotes Labour describing it as “bordering on preposterous”.

But the Daily Telegraph features a beaming Boris Johnson petting a cow at an agricultural show in Cornwall as it takes a more positive stance on his food strategy. The paper says farmers will be told to produce more fruit and vegetables to help ease the cost of living and “food threat from Ukraine war”. It says poultry workers will be eligible for seasonal migrant visas and the strategy will propose schools, prisons and hospital be “required to offer a vegan meal option”.

i newspaper — The i reports the prime minister faces a new plot to unseat him with backbench MPs mobilising the grassroots party. It suggests the plan involves getting 65 local Tory chairmen against Boris Johnson to force a non-binding no confidence vote on their leader’s fate at general meeting of the National Conservative Convention.

Mirror front page — The Mirror splashes on a bid by Stuart Campbell, who murdered his 15-year-old niece Danielle Jones, for parole. The paper notes the “freedom bid” comes despite him never revealing the location of Danielle’s body. She disappeared while on her way to catch a bus to school in Essex in 2001.

The Daily Express says there has been a surge in people making plans for UK holidays amid recent “travel chaos” at airports. The paper says the “rocketing” jump is a bid by families to “steer clear of unbearable airport queues and flight cancellations”.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are set to host a live episode of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in Buckingham Palace, according to The Sun. The paper says the prince and the “Strictly superfan” duchess have been in secret talks with the BBC bosses and the episode is due to be hosted in the palace’s ballroom later this year.

The Daily Star splashes on pictures of Britney Spear’s first husband, Jason Alexander, being tackled to the ground at her wedding venue after he gate-crashed the singer’s big day. The pop princess married Sam Asghari at a star-studded bash in California.

The Times leads on the reported remarks by the Prince of Wales that flying migrants to Rwanda is “appalling”. A source quotes him as being “more than disappointed” at the policy.

The Daily Mail says Prince Charles is risking a major clash with Number 10 – adding it has learned there has been friction between the heir to the throne and Boris Johnson. However, on an inside page, a source tells the paper the relationship between the two men is good.

The Independent writes that, despite outrage from human rights groups and opposition MPs, up to 130 people have been notified they could be sent to Rwanda.

The Telegraph pictures the prime minister petting a cow at an agricultural show as he prepares to unveil a new “grow for Britain” food strategy – urging farmers to grow more fruit and vegetables to help ease cost of living pressures.

The paper says the strategy will suggest changes to planning rules to make it easier to convert land into farms and propose that schools, prisons and hospitals be required to offer a vegan meal option.

However, the Financial Times says the food strategy will reject the main findings of a review – led by Henry Dimbleby – that was commissioned in 2019. That called for urgent changes to UK food production with the aim of fighting obesity and climate change.

The paper says the rejection of its recommendations is the latest example of the Johnson government backing away from policies perceived as “unconservative” or “anti-business”‘ – as what it calls the “beleaguered” prime minister tries to rebuild support within his party.

The Guardian says the food strategy – instead of being a ground-breaking response to the Dimbleby review – will be a “missed opportunity”.

The paper has seen a draft and says it contains virtually no fresh measures to tackle the soaring cost of food, childhood hunger, obesity or the climate emergency. It quotes Greenpeace UK as saying the food strategy “isn’t just half baked, it’s flatter than a pancake and missing crucial ingredients”.

The i newspaper reports that Tory rebels are formulating a new plot to unseat Mr Johnson. It says backbenchers plan to mobilise the party’s grassroots – with a proposal to get local Tory chairmen and women to join together to force a non-binding no confidence vote on his leadership.

The paper says the plotters are hunting for a successor – with the Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi viewed as the “unity” candidate.

In an editorial, the Daily Telegraph calls on the government to stop being so “passive” in the face of political difficulties such as the cost of living crisis. It says amid the “blizzard” of proposals in recent days a simple strategy needs to shine through: smaller state, lower taxes, less regulation.

Finally, several papers report on the news that scientists have come up with a formula for the perfect gin and tonic.

As the Express reports, the gin should be chilled to -18C and served in a balloon shaped goblet with crescent shaped – not rectangular – ice cubes.

The Sun adds that it should never be drunk through a straw, stirred more than twice or be served with lime.
