The vote of confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson, which he won 211-148, dominates Tuesday’s front pages. The Times describes Mr Johnson as a “wounded victor” and points out that a number of past Tory prime ministers have been forced to step down shortly after winning confidence votes by greater or similar margins. The Financial Times says the vote “exposed the scale of the division and animosity” in the Conservative Party and that the “revolt was far more serious than Downing Street had expected”. It quotes one minister as saying: “Anyone who thinks this will draw a line in the sand is wrong. All the people who were unhappy with Boris will still be unhappy.”The headline in the Metro reads: “The party is over Boris”. The paper says the prime minister’s “days in Downing Street now look numbered”, though also quotes him calling the vote “convincing and decisive” and a “very good result for politics and the country”.The Mirror carries a picture of Mr Johnson bent forward with his head on one hand and quotes Sir Roger Gale, a fellow Tory and one of the longest-serving MPs in Parliament, saying: “I’d be surprised if he’s still in downing Street by the end of autumn”.The vote delivered the “worst verdict on a sitting prime minister by their own party in recent times”, says the Guardian. The paper says Mr Johnson has “in effect lost his majority support in Parliament” and that there is a “risk that his government may now be paralysed”.The i claims that Tory backbenchers are now privately urging the Cabinet to stage a coup against the prime minister. The paper also carries an article by polling expert Sir John Curtice in which he warns that “one in three Tory MPs should fear for their jobs”.The front page of the Star features a picture of the prime minister with an added Pinocchio nose. The paper says that “big fibber Bozo Johnson is clinging to power after surviving an embarrassing vote of no-confidence” and that he has survived “to lie another day”.The Telegraph says Mr Johnson’s authority has been “crushed” by the vote and describes him as “clinging to power”. The paper also says he will now have to “contend with leadership rivals on manoeuvres” and names his 2019 opponent Jeremy Hunt, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, and Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt as possible successors. The prime minister was “stabbed in the back” by the 148 rebels in Monday’s vote, says The Sun. The paper also quotes Mr Johnson saying: “We are going to bash on”.The Express reports that the prime minister has hailed the vote as a “renewed mandate to deliver for Britain” and vowed to “lead [his] party to victory”.And the Mail says the MPs who voted against the prime minister have “hit the self-destruct button by opening [the] door to smirking Starmer’s coalition of chaos”. The paper quotes one MP loyal to Mr Johnson as describing Monday as “the first day of the civil war”.#AceNewsDesk report ………..Published: June.07: 2022:
