Time for rescue plan, Rishi’ and City comeback win

The cost of living crisis and calls for measures to alleviate it continue to dominate the papers. “Time for a rescue plan, Rishi!” says The Express after the head of one energy provider, E.On, predicted that 40% of his customers might be in fuel poverty by the autumn. The Mirror’s front page also picks up on the latest cost of living remarks – even power chiefs are appalled by the situation, it says. 

The issue also leads The Times, which reports that the chancellor is drawing up plans for a temporary windfall tax and is examining models used by one of his predecessors – George Osborne, as well as Margaret Thatcher. According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Boris Johnson will attempt to blunt calls for urgent action on the cost of living by turning the spotlight on the healthy state of the job market – and arguing that work is the best route out of poverty.

The front page of the i claims that the government will put cost of living help on hold as it prepares to defend Mr Johnson against the report on Downing Street lockdown parties. The Mail says the prime minister’s allies have reacted with fury to allegations that he has tried to “nobble” Sue Gray’s inquiry. It quotes a senior Whitehall source who claims it isn’t true that Mr Johnson sought a meeting with Ms Gray to discuss her findings, with the paper adding that the request came from her. The Mirror is among several papers to suggest the report will strongly criticisethe UK’s top civil servant, Simon Case, who the paper describes as “the fall guy”. 

The police investigation into the unexpected death of a child at the Birmingham Children’s hospital is the lead in The Sun. The paper reports that a 27-year-old nurse has been arrested on suspicion of administering poison. The incident is said to have sent “shockwaves” through the hospital, the paper says.

According to The Telegraph, the production of gene-edited crops is to be accelerated to help guarantee British food supplies which are threatened by the Ukraine war. Russian blockades are stopping the export of goods such as wheat from the country. The paper says ministers want to allow farms to grow more crops by planting variants that have been edited to be more resilient to disease or need less water or fertiliser. 

The Telegraph also covers Manchester City’s dramatic comeback from 2-0 down against Aston Villa to clinch the Premier League title, describing it as a “five minute miracle”. Pictures of the players kissing the trophy and jubilant fans storming the pitch fill a number of the front and back pages, with the drama described as “incredible”, “staggering”, and an “unforgettable rollercoaster ride of emotions”.
