Sunday Times — Many papers lead on the fallout from the report into maternity service failings at Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust. The Times quotes the author of the review, Donna Ockenden, as saying that childbirth is “not safe for women in England” until her recommendations are implemented in full.

The Guardian — Police are to investigate 600 further cases linked to the Shrewsbury report, says the Guardian. So far, the inquiry has found, 201 babies and nine mothers could have or would have survived if the NHS trust had provided better care.

“Biggest maternity scandal in history of the NHS,” says i, as it details the 201 baby deaths, as well as 1,592 incidents of “appalling care” as laid out in the report. One mother told the baby she “begged” staff to give her a C-section prior to the death of her baby.

The Daily Mail focuses on the “natural dogma” – the focus on “natural” childbirth and attempts to keep C-section surgery rates low – that contributed to the problem at the trust. It details how mothers who should have been offered a caesarean were “forced” to have vaginal births instead.

The Mirror — The Daily Mirror describes the scandal as “stolen lives” alongside a photograph of two grieving mothers, Kayleigh Griffiths and Rhiannon Davies, who lost babies. Elsewhere, a report says the Queen “insisted” on Prince Andrew’s key role in Prince Philip’s memorial service at Westminster Abbey on Tuesday.

The Daily Express also takes the Shrewsbury report as its lead, featuring the words of a mother, who said: “Justice is coming. For every baby”. The 250-page report exposed catastrophic failings in the trust over 20 years.

The Sun — Elsewhere, the Sun splashes an exclusive story about a masked burglar who broke into David and Victoria Beckham’s house while they were at home with their daughter, Harper, 10. The house in Holland Park, west London, was accessed through an upstairs window says the paper.

Metro leads with MP Jamie Wallis coming out as trans. In his tweet announcement on Wednesday he shared that he had been the victim of rape and blackmail. Mr Wallis, who was elected in 2019, said “things have taken a tumble. I am not OK”.

The Financial Times frontpage looks at Germany and Austria taking steps towards gas rationing amid a payment stand-off with Russia. Moscow has asked for payments in roubles from 31 March. Germany has responded by urging customers and companies to use less gas.

The Telegraph — The Daily Telegraph reports that Vladimir Putin’s top brass are afraid to reveal the “invasion blunders’”in Moscow. The paper carries comments from GCHQ’s chief that “Putin’s aides are lying to him”. The paper is also among several to feature a photo of Bruce Willis after it was revealed the Hollywood star is giving up acting due to a brain disorder aphasia.

“He Fought Until The End,” is the Daily Star’s headline following the death of The Wanted’s Tom Parker as a result of a terminal brain tumour. The 33-year-old singer had recently appeared on stage for a reunion tour with his band, following the diagnosis in October 2020.

The findings of the inquiry into what several papers call the biggest maternity scandal in the NHS prompt stark headlines.

“Childbirth ‘is not safe for women in England’,” says the Times, after the damning review of maternity services at the Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust, by the senior midwife Donna Ockenden.

The paper picks up on her comments that the failures there were “not unique” and that “safe maternity care for all” must be the legacy of the 201 babies who died.

“Stolen lives,” declares the Daily Mirror’s headline. It pictures two bereaved mothers – Rhiannon Davies and Kayleigh Griffiths – hugging one another. They were instrumental in getting the inquiry, which the paper says laid bare “two decades of fatal failings”.

The Independent says mothers were “wrongly blamed for their babies’ deaths”, while issues with care went ignored.

The Daily Mail says an “obsession” with so-called normal or natural births contributed to the scandal. The paper highlights a pledge from the Health Secretary Sajid Javid, that those responsible would be “held to account” and says police are investigating around 600 cases.

The Daily Express carries the vow of one anguished mother whose child died: “Justice is coming. For every baby.”

Elsewhere, the Daily Telegraph focuses on the war in Ukraine and the comments from the head of GCHQ that President Putin’s aides are lying to him.

In a rare public speech, Sir Jeremy Fleming said the advisers were “afraid” to tell the truth. The Telegraph reports that President Putin has already sacked eight generals and says there is mounting evidence that he is turning on his own spy chiefs.

The Times also carries Sir Jeremy’s comments and says Vladimir Putin is facing “a growing military insurrection over his personal war”.

According to the paper, defectors have already joined the Ukrainian army in a “legion” of volunteers. It says images of Russian soldiers, learning how to use anti-tank weapons, were shared on the Telegram messaging app yesterday.

The Guardian has a report on what it calls “Ukraine’s rail lifeline”. The paper says railway staff are risking all, and have safely evacuated several million refugees to the west, while the carriages have returned eastwards packed with tonnes of humanitarian aid.

It adds it is “one of the most impressive elements of Ukraine’s war effort”.

The Metro leads with Wednesday’s statement from the Conservative MP, Jamie Wallis, who is the first parliamentarian to speak publicly about being transgender.

The paper says he is being supported by colleagues and opponents.

Finally, the Sun reports that David and Victoria Beckham were home with their 10-year-old daughter when a “masked burglar” raided their mansion in west London.

The paper says the couple were unaware that a thief had broken into an upstairs bedroom in their Holland Park house and made off with thousands of pounds of designer gear and electric goods.

According to the Sun, the burglary was discovered by their son, Cruz, when he returned home with pals and police are now understood to be analysing CCTV footage.
