#AceDailyNews says heres todays Newspaper Headlines: Well peoples todays main news and views centre as the FT Weekend says the Russian advance on Kyiv was met with strong resistance on Friday, with Moscow still trying to seize Ukraine’s biggest cities. The FT notes that the “battlefield setbacks” illustrate the challenge still facing Vladimir Putin, who has moved one-third of Russia’s assembled combat forces into Ukraine, according to US estimates. The paper adds that Nato member states have pledged to carry on supplying weapons to Ukraine. “The Russians have lost a little bit of their momentum,” said a Pentagon official. “A good indication is that no population centres have been taken.”

Battle for Kyiv as ‘Russian forces descend’
“Kyiv, the city of courage” is the headline dominating the front of the Daily Mail. In addition to the image of the troops on the bridge, the paper carries a photo of a lone unarmed Ukrainian “defiantly blocking” a row of Russian armoured vehicles – a scene reminiscent of Tiananmen Square, the paper says. The paper calls the Ukrainians “lionhearted” and “fearless” in the face of the Russian invasion. The Daily Mail contrasts this with what it calls “cowardly” European Union leaders, who are accused of failing to impose tougher sanctions on Moscow.
The Sun opts for the headline: “The thin blue and yellow line.” The paper illustrates the “bravery” shown by Ukrainians who are defying the “mighty” Russian forces advancing towards them.
“We are not afraid” is the headline emblazoned on the front of the Daily Mirror, quoting President Zelensky and carrying the image of Ukrainian troops in position in Kyiv on Friday. Some 18,000 machine guns have been handed to civilians volunteering to fight for the capital, the paper adds. Meanwhile, Britain has announced new sanctions which will freeze Mr Putin’s personal assets.
“Fearless” the Daily Express says as it reports on the civilians who have joined soldiers “in a defiant stand to protect their homeland”. Mr Zelensky told his people: “We are all here defending our independence, our country, and it will stay that way.”
However, as citizens fight to defend their country, Western leaders fear Mr Putin could unleash “devastating thermobaric rockets” on Ukraine, according to the Daily Telegraph. The deployment of such weapons could have the capacity to reduce cities to rubble, resulting in “huge loss of life to the civilian population”, the paper adds. It says Moscow has previously used such weapons in Chechnya and Syria.
The thermobaric weapons are known as “vacuum bombs” because they suck oxygen into the powerful blast, causing internal organ damage, according to the Times. It says officials believe Russian forces missed most of their day-one objectives, with fears they might resort to “indiscriminate firing”. The paper adds that the attack on Kyiv is the most devastating assault the city has faced since the German invasion of 1941.
Meanwhile, the Guardian opts for a leading image of a woman and her son on board an evacuation train travelling from Kyiv to Lviv. Its headline is: “Kyiv on the brink.” The paper says that it is “clear” the invasion is being “fiercely resisted”, but it is also becoming apparent that Russia has more “military might” which can be unleashed on its neighbour. Russia has fired 200 ballistic and cruise missiles, with some landing in residential areas, the paper reports.
And the Daily Star says former heavyweight boxing champions Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko are among those who plan to take up arms against Russia.
The same photograph – of Ukrainian soldiers lying or kneeling on a bridge in Kyiv, guns at the ready – appears on many front pages.
BBC News:
The Daily Mail says the image is a “sight you never thought you’d see in a modern European capital”.
The Sun describes the troops as “the thin blue and yellow line” – a reference to the colours of Ukraine’s flag.
The city is the focus of most headlines.
“The battle for Kyiv” says the Daily Telegraph, while the Guardian has“Kyiv on the brink”.
For the Daily Mail, Kyiv is “the City of Courage”. And the Daily Express describes the Ukrainians as “Fearless”.
Ukrainian soldiers take positions in central Kyiv
The Times and the Telegraph say Western leaders fear Vladimir Putin could use devastating thermobaric rockets because fierce resistance by Ukrainians has slowed the Russian advance.
The Telegraph says the rockets are understood to have been taken into Ukraine but have not yet been used.
The Times says they are also known as vacuum bombs because they suck oxygen into powerful blasts.
According to the Guardian, Ukrainians are preparing a last-ditch defence of Kyiv with barricades and calls for civilians to arm themselves with petrol bombs.
A Western intelligence source has told FT Weekend that the capital is likely to fall within days because the Ukrainian military – even though it is putting up a fight – will be overwhelmed by the arrival of tens of thousands of extra Russian troops.
The Guardian highlights American estimates that Moscow has so far committed only about a third of the attacking force it has mustered on Ukraine’s borders in recent months.
Smoke and flames rise over during the shelling near Kyiv
The Daily Mirror’s reporter, Andy Lines, describes how he joined the mass exodus from Kyiv towards Poland after he was told to leave his hotel because Russian tanks were nearby.
He says it took five hours and 38 minutes just to get out of the city as the road was clogged with cars, mini-buses, lorries, motorbikes and even tractors.
On the hard shoulder, he saw thousands of people walking, even though the Polish border is more than 300 miles away.
The Mail praises “lionhearted Ukrainians” but accuses EU leaders of cowardice for refusing to kick Russia out of the Swift payments system.
According to the Times, Boris Johnson pushed for the measure to be taken at Friday’s virtual meeting of the G7, but Italy and Germany strongly resisted the proposal.
The Mail says Italy has made sure its luxury goods makers can continue to export to Russia and Belgium has secured a similar deal for its lucrative diamond trade.
A report in the FT Weekend says the energy company BP – which owns nearly one fifth of the Russian oil and gas producer, Rosneft – is under pressure to sell the stake.
The article says Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng summoned BP’s chief executive, Bernard Looney, to express his concern because Rosneft is providing fuel to the Russian military.
But a big shareholder tells the paper the company would struggle to find a buyer for its stake.
The Guardian says a number of prominent Russians have gone public with their opposition to the war, despite the professional and personal risks that come with dissent.
A veteran newspaper journalist has been expelled from the diplomatic pool, after she wrote an open letter condemning the invasion.
Popular actors and musicians have also spoken out and have been punished, including the host of a popular talk-show on state television.
