#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: Well peoples today is ALL about PM Boris Johnson and as The Guardian says Putin is “on collision course” with the West as he declares talks are “at a dead end”. The UK is set to announce sanctions later, with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson saying the Kremlin decision is an “ill omen” for the conflict, the paper reports.

Now it’s over to you” is Metro’s headline, as it reports Mr Johnson’s new plan for living with Covid. The paper says the PM stressed personal responsibility and suggested we should now treat Covid like the flu, as he scrapped requirements for self-isolation and free testing.

“Putin sends tanks into Ukraine” is the Times’s stark headline, with the paper calling it a “de facto military invasion of the eastern corner of Ukraine”. The paper says UK sanctions will target individuals and companies with assets in Britain, but the full range of measures will not be deployed unless there is a “full invasion”.

The Financial Times features the same story, and pays close attention to Putin’s “angry televised speech”, in which he accused the West of using the country as a tool to destroy Russia. The paper says he made clear his grievances with Kyiv stretched to Ukraine’s existence.

The Daily Express headline reports the prime minister said it was “time to get our confidence back” as he called it a “moment of pride” to roll back Covid restrictions. But the paper says he also gave a “sobering warning” about the possibility of new variants to come.

“New Covid plan: Pay for your own test” is the i’s sceptical take on the announcement. The paper says tests will cost between £2 and £5 each and only the most vulnerable will get a free supply.

The Daily Mail’s contrasting take on the ending of Covid restrictions says that “Boris throws office the shackles” , with the paper describing the PM’s news conference as “historic”. It quotes Mr Johnson saying “darkest, grimmest years” in our peacetime history are at an end.

“Lateral blow” is the Daily Mirror’s reaction to the news that free rapid tests are ending. The paper calls it a “bonfire of the virus safeguards” and reports that experts say the lowest paid will be hardest hit, with greater restrictions on statutory sick pay.

The Sun front page features a different Covid story: a “ground-breaking” medical trial in Mexico that the paper says offers hope to Derek Draper, husband of TV presenter Kate Garraway, who was left severely disabled by the virus. The paper quotes Ms Garraway saying: “He is desperate to get better.”

And finally, the Daily Star covers the news that food writer Felicity Cloake has recommended eating marmalade on bacon sandwiches instead of HP sauce or ketchup. The paper calls it a “bacon butty horror” and jokes she must be “a sarnie short of a picnic”.

” Putin puts Russia on collision course with west over Ukraine,” is the stark headline in the Guardian, after he publicly recognised two Russian-backed regions, in south-east Ukraine, as independent states.

BBC News:

The paper says the Russian president has declared that talks with the West are “at a dead end”, and its central and eastern Europe correspondent, Shaun Walker, writes of “ominous” words about Ukraine from an increasingly isolated and “angry” Vladimir Putin. 

President Putin’s announcement is also the lead in the Financial Times. The paper says he has put Russia on a “war footing”, by redrawing the borders. 

It says the markets have responded with alarm, including the Moex stock index in Moscow; the FT says it dropped 10.5%, its steepest fall since Russia seized Crimea in 2014. 

“Putin warns of bloodshed as he moves troops into Ukraine,” is the Daily Telegraph’s headline. It says that the Russian leader’s tone and his description of Ukraine as an imminent security threat leave “little hope” that war can be avoided. 

The Times is sceptical about the Russian president’s deployment of what he calls “peacekeeping” troops, saying in reality he’s sending “tanks into Ukraine”. 

The paper warns him that Britain and its western allies are poised to hit back with sanctions. 

“Putin and ‘ill omen’,” is the Daily Mirror’s headline, as it picks up on Boris Johnson’s words. The paper accuses the Russian president of fanning the flames in Ukraine. 

The Daily Mirror also features the prime minister’s scrapping of Covid restrictions in England. “Lateral blow,” is how the paper describes his decision to axe free tests. 

It says people may have to pay £5 for each test from April, after what it calls the “PM’s bonfire of virus safeguards”. 

The Independent highlights a warning by England’s chief medical officer, Professor Sir Chris Whitty of new, more virulent forms of Covid. 

It says that charities and unions have also sounded the alarm over the end to isolation laws. 

The Independent says there are concerns that Boris Johnson’s Living with Covid plan will neglect the most vulnerable people in society – and cause “uncertainty, anxiety and hardship”.

By contrast, the Daily Mail sees the end to curbs as the prime minister throwing off the shackles, after almost two years of on-off lockdowns. 

The Mail’s Scottish edition also has this front-page message for Scotland’s first minister. 

“It’s time to end our Covid curbs, Nicola,” reads the headline. Ms Sturgeon is due to set out her latest plans for dealing with coronavirus today. 

Metro focuses on Boris Johnson’s desire for people to show personal responsibility in how they treat Covid in the future. “Now it’s over to you,” declares the paper’s headline. 

A ball game – invented by three middle-aged men, one afternoon, in the United States – has drawn interest from the Times.

The sport is a tennis-like game, played with wooden bats and a perforated ball, and came about when the son of one of the men complained he had nothing to do. 

“Pickleball” has become so popular across America, it’s now vying for a place at the Los Angeles Olympics, in the summer of 2028. 

As the Times puts it: “This is one pickle you’ll want to be in.”
