#AceDailyNews says here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: The i says the Chancellor is taking centre stage as Boris Johnson is “isolated”. It says Tory MPs fear the prime minister has lost his authority over No 10 and they claim he is offering peerages and knighthoods to win support.

The Guardian also reports that the PM is “ever more isolated” as it says his attempts to rally his “dilapidated top team” floundered on Friday. The paper also says that a ninth Tory backbencher publicly confirming he has submitted a letter of no confidence in the prime minister is a further sign of Boris Johnson’s waning authority.
The Daily Express leads with a plea from Boris Johnson to his MPs. “Save my skin and I’ll change” is the headline. The paper says the battling prime minister has written to all MPs vowing to given them mor say in policy-making.
The Daily Telegraph leads on British Gas apologising to hundreds of thousands of customers for its failure to fix and service broken boilers this winter. The energy giant has promised to improve customer service after facing criticism for its policy of allowing staff to work from home several days a week. On the ongoing political fallout, former minister Nick Gibb has set out why he believes Boris Johnson should go.
The Daily Mail reports that health officials are in the office for four days a month. It says that despite No 10 trumpeting a back to work drive, Department of Health staff are only obliged to do a minimum of four days a month in the office.
As you might expect, the Financial Times focuses on economic matters as it says Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey has been accused of “hypocrisy” after he suggested workers should not seek big pay rises in order to keep inflation under control. Downing Street has distanced itself from his comments.
The Daily Star leads on the same story, but it’s headline is the “Plank of England” as it says “You really couldn’t make it up could you?” The paper says Andrew Bailey earns £575,000 a year.
The travails of the prime minister, once more, feature heavily in Saturday’s papers.
The Daily Express does its best to make it sound like things aren’t too bad for Boris Johnson. While describing him as being “on the ropes”, it suggests the letter he sent to Tory MPs yesterday, vowing to build new relationships with them, was a “dramatic fightback.”
Elsewhere, though, there is evidence that fightback might be shortlived. In the Daily Telegraph, the former minister, Nick Gibb, sets out in detail why he has become the latest Tory MP to seek a new prime minister. “Some argue that eating a few canapes with a glass of prosecco is hardly a reason to resign”, he writes, before adding: “But telling the truth matters, and nowhere more so than in the House of Commons.”
Cabinet turmoil and more on the PM’s birthday bash: The Daily Mirror says it has been told the police have been handed a picture of Boris Johnson drinking a can of Estrella beer at his lockdown birthday bash. The paper says the picture was taken by his own official photographer. “Ambushed by a beer too?” the paper asks.
The Daily Mirror, meanwhile, leads on a claim that Boris Johnson was photographed at the birthday celebration he had in Downing Street holding a can of beer – describing it as “a new low to the Partygate row”. The paper says the “bombshell photo” – thought to have been taken by the prime minister’s official photographer – has been passed to police investigating lockdown social gatherings by government staff.
The Times reports “civil war” has broken out in the cabinet, after the Chancellor Rishi Sunak, and Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, distanced themselves from the prime minister’s attack on Sir Keir Starmer over Jimmy Savile. “Sunak has to go”, it quotes an unnamed cabinet minister as saying. Another is dismissive of the chancellor, telling the paper: “He’s not wielding a knife, it’s a penknife.” A cabinet source is quoted as saying of Mr Javid’s intervention that it was “plain stupid”.
The Daily Mail’s lead story is the suggestion that officials in the Department of Health are being told they need to be in the office just once a week. The paper says that’s in spite of No 10 “trumpeting a back to work drive.” A Whitehall spokesman approached by the paper declined to comment.
The Financial Times says plans are being drawn up for a £1bn renovation of the British Museum, in London. Some of the money would be earmarked for refurbishing public galleries. But much of the funds would be used for more prosaic improvements, as a person involved tells the paper: “The roof is falling apart, the mechanical system is falling apart and the galleries are not properly heated.”
Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey attracts the ire of the Daily Star
Finally, it’s safe to say the Daily Star does not approve of the Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, urging people not to demand overly large wage increases – despite the huge increase in the cost of living – in order to restrain inflation. “The Plank of England” is its headline. “There’s absolutely nothing better than being lectured about fiscal prudence by a prat with a £575,000 a year job, is there?”, its front page says.
