Newspaper Headlines: ‘Keep face masks plan’ & PM’s child jabs decision with the front pages reflecting concern about rising numbers of COVID19 infections from the variant originating in India.

“PM will be forced to decide on child jabs” is the headline on the Daily Telegraph, which reports that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation will not make a recommendation on vaccinating children next month – only setting out “options and consequences”. The paper says some doctors, MPs, parents and celebrities are seeking to pressure the Boris Johnson not to go ahead with jabs for under-18s.

Meanwhile, the i newspaper’s front page says that second jabs could be given sooner than the current eight-week interval in an effort to head off the third wave of infections. The paper says that in deciding whether reopening will go ahead on 21 June, the prime minister is eager to limit further damage to the economy, while some medics are arguing for a two-month delay.”

Now we can remember the ones we lost” is the Daily Mail’s headline, as the paper reports that it has achieved its £2.3m fundraising target for a Covid memorial at St Paul’s Cathedral. The Prince of Wales and the prime minister paid tribute to the public’s generosity, the paper says.

The Daily Mirror hails a “dementia miracle”, as it says the first drug shown to slow the progress of Alzheimer’s disease is set to be approved in the US and could be available on the NHS next year. Alzheimer’s UK tells the paper the drug, aducanumab, means there is “huge hope” now.

A call to “end the £4bn ‘loyalty’ rip-off” leads the Daily Express, which reports that a watchdog has banned insurers from always raising premiums on customers who stick with the same company. The paper says campaigners also want to end the “loyalty penalty” for energy, mortgage, mobile phones and broadband.

The Financial Times leads on the news that a key inflation measure in the US in April recorded its biggest year-on-year jump since the 1990s, fuelling concerns about price rises. The paper also reports that the Angel of the North sculptor Anthony Gormley has offered a solution to the dilemma of what to do with the statue of imperialist Cecil Rhodes at Oxford’s Oriel College: turn it around to face the wall, he suggests.

And the Daily Star is delighted to report that experts say working less could help save the planet, with proposals to adopt a four-day week for environmental reasons. “Where do we sign up?” the paper asks.

The Times says ministers are discussing contingency plans that could mean only a partial end to the lockdown in England on 21 June.

The paper has been told that the wearing of face masks and guidance to work from home could remain in place, while priority would be given to the end of the “one metre plus” distancing rule and the “rule of six” indoors. 

According to the i newspaper, people could be called up for their second dose of a coronavirus vaccine even sooner than the accelerated eight-week interval, in a race to stay ahead of the variant.

It says NHS guidance to vaccination centres says they can be “pragmatic” in offering the second jab ahead of the official timescale. 

The Cambridge professor whose argument against a herd immunity strategy helped trigger the first lockdown tells the Guardian about the risks of easing restrictions next month. 

Professor Sir Tim Gowers warns that “things will get bad very, very quickly” after 21 June if the government has misjudged factors such as the spread of new variants. 

He says: “The downside of being a bit more cautious is quite a lot smaller than the downside of getting it wrong.”

The Daily Telegraph understands that the committee advising the government on vaccinations, the JCVI, is to insist that Boris Johnson makes a political decision on whether to give the jabs to under-18s. 

The paper says the JCVI is expected to set out “options and consequences” rather than take a stance on the issue.

The Daily Mail says its campaign to help create a memorial for Covid victims at St Paul’s Cathedral in London has smashed through its £2.3m target, four weeks after it was launched. 

The money was raised by the paper’s readers and a string of donors.

No excuse

The Times says lessons must be learned after the series of failings by police, probation services and MI5 that contributed to the murders of two people by the convicted terrorist, Usman Khan, at Fishmongers’ Hall, in November 2019. 

An inquest jury concluded on Friday that there were “serious deficiencies” in Khan’s management between his release from prison and the fatal stabbings.

How did they miss this monster? the Daily Mail asks. For the Daily Mirror, it’s beyond belief that state agencies failed to consider the risk of allowing Khan to travel from Staffordshire to London that day. In the Sun’s view, there’s no excuse for the ineptitude over Khan.

The findings of an inquiry that Boris Johnson didn’t break the ministerial code over the financing of his Downing Street flat refurbishment are widely considered. “Bojo off the hook on cash for curtains”, is the Sun’s headline on the story. 

Stephen Bush, writing on the New Statesman website, says it’s wholly believable that Mr Johnson simply wouldn’t ask what was going on with the funding. 

However, the writer adds that these are not good traits for a successful Prime Minister to have. 

The Daily Mail agrees. Propriety matters, it says. If you want to buy something or have work done, you should know where the money is coming from to pay for it, it adds.

For its lead, the Daily Mirror says millions of Alzheimer’s patients have been given fresh hope, with US regulators set to approve a new breakthrough drug within days. 

It says clinical trials of Aducanumab indicated it slowed mental decline in patients given doses at an early stage by as much as 22% after 18 months. It may get approval in the UK by the autumn, meaning it could be offered on the NHS by 2022, the paper adds.

And a number of papers report that the Duke of Sussex was told of the Duke of Edinburgh’s death by police, who were called to his California home in the middle of the night.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Buckingham Palace contacted the US embassy in London, which in turn called the sheriff’s office in Santa Barbara. An officer was then sent to Prince Harry’s home. 

The paper says it’s not known whether family members tried to call him to break the news beforehand, but aides will have been acutely aware of the need to inform the duke before the official announcement.

Finally, the papers have been following the progress of Wally the walrus – who was first spotted in UK waters earlier this year.

The Times says Wally, who is believed to have travelled from Greenland on an ice floe, spent three months lounging on the coast around Tenby in Pembrokeshire before being spotted this month off Padstow in Cornwall. 

He now appears to have decided to see what the shellfish on the west coast of France have to offer, the paper reports. 

The Daily Telegraph says experts believe he either made a navigational error or was simply exploring. 

“Wally on his jollies”, is the Daily Mirror’s headline.
