Latest developments in Ukraine and Russia

• Hunting the enemy: Local police and federal agents in Moscow have reportedly started interrogating, searching, and harassing random Ukrainian nationals living in the city. According to the human rights watchdog OVD.info, many officers don’t understand what they’re supposed to be doing in this campaign. Some have allegedly tried to pressure Ukrainians to pursue expedited Russian citizenship, while others have even fabricated misdemeanor charges against Ukrainians living in the capital.
• The Terminator weighs in: In a new, emotional nine-minute video(that, at the time of this writing, has 15.5 million views on Twitter and more than half a million views on Telegram), Arnold Schwarzeneggar describes his “love for the Russian people” and argues that the Kremlin is lying to the public about its war of aggression in Ukraine.
• Teach your children well: The Russian Attorney General’s Office sent a letter to the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration accusing the school’s Liberal Arts Department of “destroying the nation’s traditional values” and violating Articles 38 and 43 of the Russian Constitution, which relate to the education of “children.”
• The Purge: Asked about Vladimir Putin’s recent remarks concerning “fifth columnists,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Thursday that Russia will be “cleansed” of traitors as they “vanish from our lives,” either by emigrating or being “punished by the courts.” Putin’s press secretary was apparently referring primarily to Russians who oppose the invasion of Ukraine.
• Is this good for the company? Earlier this month, Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller and Gazprom-Media CEO Alexander Zharov sent separate companywide letters to all their employees, warning that the West has unleashed an “information war” against Russia. In the messages, they urged everyone “not to succumb to destructive behavior.”
• Criminal Code 207.3 enforcement begins: Officials in Tomsk continue to charge local bloggers with the new felony offense of “spreading disinformation about Russia’s armed forces.” The authorities have even opened a criminal case against Marina Novikova, a 63-year-old woman in the city of Seversk who has been sharing antiwar views on her Telegram channel, which had just 170 subscribers when the police decided to intervene. If convicted, she could go to prison for up to three years.
