As Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its third month, the Russian Defense Ministry has officially declared that its main aim has shifted to taking “full control” of the Donbas and southern Ukraine. According to Meduza’s sources close to the Kremlin, establishing “full control” will involve orchestrating pseudo-referendums on the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk “People’s Republics” joining the Russian Federation — and on Russian-occupied Kherson declaring independence from Ukraine. However, these “referendums” have already been postponed until May, allegedly due Russia’s military failures in Ukraine. 🗣️ A dispatch from Kherson, where Russian occupiers are poised to conduct a sham referendum (5.5-minute read)

The Russian army captured Kherson within days of invading Ukraine. Kherson residents were defiant; they continued flying the Ukrainian flag on the city council building and have held multiple protest rallies against Russian occupation. Meanwhile, the local media, now under Russian control, regularly reports that residents of the entire Kherson region will soon decide via referendum whether to create a Kherson “People’s Republic” (KNR) analogous to the Russian-backed puppet states in the Donbas. A journalist living in Kherson, who chose to remain anonymous, describes what life is like there today.

The Russian Defense Ministry’s plan to “establish complete control over the Donbas and southern Ukraine” includes securing a land bridge all the way to the Kremlin-backed breakaway region of Transnistria in Moldova. Earlier this week, Transnistria was hit by a series of explosions. And on Tuesday the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ General Staff reported that Russian troops stationed on Transnistrian territory had been put on full combat alert. 👋 The Gazprombank executive who left Russia to fight alongside Ukrainians (5-minute read)

Immediately after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, former Gazprombank Vice President Igor Volobuyev fled Russia for Kyiv. The Ukrainian-born veteran of both Gazprombank and Gazprom now plans to join the Territorial Defense Forces and “defend his motherland with weapons in hand.” Volobuyev discussed his decision to leave Russia in recent interviews with Russian investigative outlet The Insider, Ukrainian outlet Liga.net, and Ukrainian blogger Denis Kazansky.
