Volkanovski’s lightweight debut: Illawarra UFC champion Alex Volkanovski could make his debut in the lightweight division by the end of the month. The Windang fighter who is the current featherweight champion will travel to Abu Dhabi as the backup fighter for the lightweight bout between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev.
Hawks import suffers season-ending injury: In a major blow to the Illawarra Hawks, the club has confirmed star import Justin Robinson has torn his meniscus and requires surgery. The 24-year-old American injured his knee during the opening round loss to the Sydney Kings. The Hawks are now on the hunt for a replacement.
Charges laid over Bulli siege: A 38-year-old man and 51-year-old woman have been charged over last week’s siege in Bulli. Officers attached to the tactical operations unit were called to an apartment block on Point Street last Friday. Following a protracted operation, the pair were arrested and taken to hospital under police guard. They’ve been charged with nine offences including being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and harassing a police officer.
Million dollar fine for sewage discharge at golf course: Sydney Water has committed to pay a million dollars to Wollongong Council for dune restoration projects following three sewage discharges in 2020 and 2021. Three main overflows of untreated sewage at Wollongong Golf Club impacted the course and entered the Gurungaty Waterway three times. Under an enforceable order from the EPA, Sydney Water will also contribute $250 000 towards pollution containment research.
Liberal preselection underway for South Coast: The Liberal party has confirmed two people have submitted nominations for the party in the seat of South Coast, as sitting MP Shelley Hancock prepares to retire. Small business and charity owner Jemma Tribe will take on former Shelley Hancock staffer and North Shoalhaven Meals on Wheels Director, Luke Sikora.
Picton Show cancelled … again: The Picton Show will now be held in November after the show society decided it was too wet to host thousands of people at the showground last weekend. How’s the weather looking?
A pizza delivery driver was trapped by floodwaters at Otford on Saturday night following torrential rain and had to be rescued by the RFS. Ulladulla also copped a delude. We’ll see showers come and go in the coming days but nothing like the rain over the weekend. Saturday’s the pick of the bunch, blue skies and a light breeze.
