A 21-year-old man was also rescued and taken to Shellharbour Hospital in a serious but stable condition. It’s understood they were washed off rocks while out walking. A report is being prepared for the coroner.

Military explosive detonated: A 400-metre exclusion zone was set up at Bass Point on Tuesday following the discovery of a military flare at Shallows Coastal Reserve. A beachgoer reported the device, described as being the size of a cricket bat, to emergency services. Defence personnel also attended and the flare was disposed of in a controlled explosion.

Inquiry into council: Public hearings for an inquiry into whether suspended Wingecarribee councillors appropriately carried out their roles and responsibilities will begin next month, and continue until mid-April.

Concerns over ethanol storage: Wollongong council has written to the Planning Minister, raising safety concerns over plans to build a bitumen plant and ethanol storage facility next to one another at Port Kembla. Greens councillor Mithra Cox says “it’s a bit like putting the match factory next to the dynamite factory”. Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery says transporting volatile substances on the city’s roads is also an issue.

Smart drumlines: Fifteen GPS-linked buoys will be installed in waters between Jones Beach and Gerringong from next week. Detected sharks will be tagged, released and tracked by scientists from the Department of Primary Industries.

Sand mine expansion to resume: Boral says it will push on with its Dunmore sand mine expansion despite efforts to have the site protected under Aboriginal heritage laws. Boral’s chief executive says building-grade sand is scarce and in demand, and the company will begin excavating in areas where artefacts have not been found.
