Former Milton Anglican School destined to reopen to public students
The Coalition and Labor have committed to using a portion of the former site of the Shoalhaven Anglican School at Milton for public education. Maximum security prisoners recycle maximum load of waste
South Coast Correctional Centre inmates have been sorting and recycling material from inside the prison, including aluminium meal trays, drink contains and carboard. Drink bottles are now recycled through Return and Earn, with proceeds donated to the Shoalhaven Homeless Hub.You’ll be surprised at how much waste they’ve recycled

Captain Australia is back to thank the Illawarra
About this time last year Brisbane dad Simon Harvey was passing through Wollongong dressed as a fictitious superhero called Captain Australia. He was on foot, walking from Brisbane to Melbourne as part of a pilgrimage to bounce back from cancer and raise money for the Kids Cancer Project. Firefighters spend hours putting out West Wollongong blaze
It took about 50 firefighters to contain and extinguish a blaze in West Wollongong last week. When they arrived on the scene they discovered the house had thousands of flammable items including timber, paper and garden machinery. Free plants for Wollondilly: Wollondilly residents are being urged to snap up council’s offer of free trees from the community nursery. All residents in the shire are entitled to five free, native species trees per quarter — and hundreds are still sitting at the nursery waiting for homes.

More EV chargers needed: Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley says she’s concerned some holidaymakers are being deterred from visiting the South Coast because of a shortage of electric vehicle charging infrastructure. There are two public charging stations between Shellharbour and Batemans Bay.
Zombie crackdown: The NSW Greens are calling for a moratorium on all coastal development until so-called “zombie” development applications are extinguished. The term refers to projects that have been granted approval by councils but have been lying dormant for years. The party is launching a report today that details 20 case studies, including some in the Shoalhaven.
Shark sightings: Kiama lifeguards closed and then reopened Kendalls Beach on Tuesday following a shark sighting. A three-metre tiger shark also forced the closure of Mollymook Beach on Monday.
Milton birthing services: The NSW Labor candidate for South Coast, Liza Butler, says the local health service doesn’t want women to give birth in Milton and claims it has denied doctors, who are happy to provide the service, a chance to undertake training. In 2016, the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District downgraded birthing services at the hospital because of safety following an extensive review.
Jim Molan remembered: Political figures across the Illawarra and South Coast have remembered Liberal senator Jim Molan as a “gentleman” following his death this week from cancer at the age of 72. Shellharbour Councillor Kellie Marsh says Mr Molan made multiple visits to the city as he was fond of the local airport and the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society.
Fire warning: The Rural Fire Service says grassfires across the region are proving difficult to extinguish because the soil beneath remains sodden from last year’s wet weather. Volunteers responded to multiple small grassfires along the South Coast and in the Illawarra last weekend, including two which were ignited by lightning strikes.Visit our website for more local news
