Man jailed after attempting to drown his partner: Police alleged Shane Noel Barker hit a woman known to him in the head with a spanner, choked her and tried to drown her in a bathtub. This week at the Campbelltown District Court, the 38-year-old from Nowra was sentenced to eight years in prison with a non-parole period of four years.
Overseas doctors allowed to work in southern Wollongong: The federal government has announced that Dapto and surrounding suburbs will be included as a distribution priority area, which means local medical practices can now recruit doctors from overseas.
Opposition to moving heritage migrant huts: The Illawarra Migrant Heritage Project says it’s opposed to the relocation of heritage-listed migrant hostel huts at Fairy Meadow to make way for a new $50 million Centre of Excellence for the St George Illawarra Dragons. The huts housed newly-arrived migrants between 1951 and 1982. Chair Franca Facci says they’re a significant part of local history and should remain where they are.

Former Wollondilly mayor to run as independent: Wollondilly Shire councillor Judy Hannan has announced she’ll run as an independent again for the seat of Wollondilly in the NSW election. Cr Hannan says she’ll campaign on climate and disaster resilience, concerns over the fast-tracking of major housing developments, a Picton bypass and her opposition to the raising of the Warragamba Dam wall.
