Rare red panda dies after being hit by a car
Kesari the red panda escaped from Symbio Wildlife Park, only to be run over by a car. The adventurous critter, mum to five cubs, seized the opportunity when a tree fell on the enclosure, providing her with access out of the zoo.
Sadly, it was decided the panda’s injuries were not survivable

Harmony Week celebrated at Nan Tien Temple
The Venerable Zhili with Reverand Miao You (above) are from the Nan Tien Temple. In recognition of Harmony Week, the temple held a morning of performances, speeches, meditation and a chance for people to exchange a gift with someone from another culture.

What else made news in the past week?
Book bonanza: The Lifeline Big Book Fair has been hailed a huge success after more than 7,000 people bought books during the weekend. The event raised $190,000 to help train new volunteers at the suicide prevention service.
Stolen silver: Police are appealing for help from the public to identify a car believed to have been used in the theft of silver bullion near Picton. The consignment of 192 individual five-kilogram silver bars valued at more than $1 million was transported by truck from Sydney to Melbourne, in November last year. Anybody with information is urged to contact the police.
The cost of living: Retailers say food prices will stay high for a few more months as the industry deals with the impacts of COVID, floods and the war in Ukraine. Raw materials, energy prices and freight costs are all factors in the hike.
Death of a leader: The former general manager of Wollongong Council, Rod Oxley, has died at Wollongong Hospital. He was 74. Mr Oxley died after suffering a medical episode earlier this month. In 2000 he was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding service to local government and the community.
Rental increases: According to recent data, the cost of renting a property in regional areas has increased by more than 17 per cent. The report, by the University of NSW and the Australian Council of Social Services, blamed economic stimulus during the pandemic. Illawarra Housing Trust chief executive, Michelle Adair, says the money would have been better spent building more affordable houses.
A helping hand: A charity in the Shoalhaven says it’s experienced a 20 per cent rise in the number of families seeking help in the past month. Salt Ministries says vulnerable families are in crisis because of the high cost of food, fuel and a housing shortage in the region.
Soggy show a success: Moss Vale Show secretary Edwina Grant says she’s relieved with this year’s turnout, after having to cancel many events because of wet weather. Ms Grant says visitors poured through the gate at the weekend, despite the soggy conditions.
Think smarter: The New South Wales government has revealed its draft plan for the first school curriculum overhaul in a generation. The maths and English syllabus reform will have a greater focus on problem solving, reasoning and writing and grammar. The changes are set to be implemented for years three to 10 by 2023.
Living with the locals: South Coast residents, war artists George Gittoes and Hellen Rose, are heading to Ukraine to document the invasion by Russia. Mr Gittoes says they will use multi-media to document the conflict and plan to spend a month living with locals.
