It is less than a fortnight until some Shellharbour residents go back to the polls — and there’s been no shortage of drama. Marianne Saliba has been ousted from the Labor party and accused of running over her opponent’s foot.

Wait, what? Here is what Ms Saliba claims happened in that parking lotThe outside of the Wingecarribee council building‘Lazy’ decision not to take Wingecarribee back to polls

And speaking of local government elections … Wingecarribee won’t be having one until 2024, despite the former council being sacked last week. The sacked councillors will be allowed to run for re-election.

An administrator will remain in place, but is there another option?A steam roller fixes potholes on bad roadsThe mega pothole causing road chaos

It’s been a bumpy ride across most of the region’s roads since the last east coast low, but Gerroa Road was especially bumpy this week.

Check out this giant pothole — you wouldn’t want to hit this at 100kph!Aerial footage of a beach-side town: KiamaCould ghost towns be the answer to the housing crisis?

Census data has shown there are a million homes sitting empty, while just metres away, families are being forced to live in tents. Investment homes are mostly empty and there are calls for people to make them available as permanent rentals.

Why can’t NSW municipalities charge higher rates for empty homes?A vintage car zooms around the Wakefield Park race trackCourt hushes Wakefield Park Raceway

A Land and Environment Court ruling has further restricted activity on the Wakefield Park Raceway at Tirrannaville near Goulburn. The ruling came after noise complaints prompted action in 2019. Some say with so many restrictions on its main attraction, the town could struggle to survive.

What did the court say?An MMA fighter in a UFC belt walks into the arenaWhy you just cannot doubt Alex Volkanovski

Look, the bloke is a legend of his sport. He’s the undisputed UFC featherweight champion and the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world. He’s also beaten key opponent Max Holloway not once, not twice, but three times.

So why is he copping so much hate in the US?Australian runner Jessica Hull in a raceWhat else made news in the past week?

Local athlete at Worlds: Jess Hull did herself, her country and us here in the Illawarra proud this week at the World Athletics Championships. She placed 7th in the 1500 metre final and while it wasn’t the result she was hoping for, it was an insanely fast race. Find out how quickly she ran here.

Calls for more paramedics: The Health Services Union has urged the state government to prioritise the rollout of new ambulance stations and more paramedics in the Illawarra. It says on Tuesday night, at least eight patients were delayed at Wollongong Hospital and some were on stretchers for more than four hours. It seems pressure on health services are mounting as a result of population increases in the region and the added pressures of COVID-19.

L’etape cancelled … again: Perhaps this event just isn’t meant to be? For the fourth time, the L’etape bike riding race has been cancelled. This time, it’s because part of the Jamberoo Mountain Pass has collapsed. Previously it was because of a backlash from locals, then it was because of COVID-19 and before that, an east coast low. Organisers are, understandably, devastated.

Visa delays for UOW students: More than 215,000 student visa holders have arrived in Australia since borders re-opened in December last year, and the Department of Home Affairs says addressing the backlog of applications is a priority. A record number of international students have applied to the University of Wollongong this year.

UAP volunteer pleads not guilty: A United Australia Party volunteer has pleaded not guilty in Wollongong court to charges relating to an alleged altercation outside a Dapto polling booth. Gaylene Heferen was charged with stalking or intimidation and destroying or damage property before the federal election.

Developments in flood-prone areas: The deputy mayor of the Wollondilly Shire said he is mind-boggled the state government is green-lighting housing developments in flood-prone areas. A site at Menangle in the north of the shire, approved for 400 homes in 2018, was inundated during last week’s torrential rain event. Matthew Deeth says it’s not appropriate to build in areas where there’s a risk of fires or floods.

Local church development application pulled: Plans for a conference centre and accommodation complex on the old Huskisson Church site have been withdrawn this week. There has been significant community opposition to the proposal, primarily due to environmental and cultural concerns.

Truffle troubles: While the rest of Australia is on track for it’s largest truffle harvest ever, Southern Highlands farmers say extensive rain has contributed to a poor local season. Robertson Truffles owner Patrick Mahoney says while cold temperatures are ideal, it’s just been too wet. We’re hearing you Patrick!

Hospital visiting restrictions reintroduced: The Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District has reintroduced restrictions on hospital visits as a result of the recent surge in COVID-19 cases. One visitor per patient will be allowed during visiting hours to help curb the spread. Visitors must also still complete a rapid antigen test before arrival and must wear a mask.

Roller Hawks take title: You ripper! They’ve done it again! The Wollongong Roller Hawks has won an incredible fourth consecutive National Wheelchair Basketball League title. The team beat the Perth Wheelcats in the final 75-66. Tristan Knowles led the team, stuffing the stat sheet with a triple double of 24 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists. They’ve now won seven NWBL titles.
