The first leaders’ debate of the 2022 federal election campaign has arrived, with Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Labor leader Anthony Albanese going head-to-head at a voters’ forum in Brisbane.

ICYMI: The election campaign takes a negative turn with the messaging from both sides

Australia is now into the second week of campaigning.

With Labor desperately trying to regroup after struggling in the first week, both sides are now taking a strongly negative turn in their messaging, Laura Tingle reports.

With the federal election underway, it can be hard to keep up with where each party stands on some of the key issues.

To make it easy to keep track of what plans each party has for a range of key policy areas, political reporter Georgia Hitch (who you’ll recognise from our daily election live blogs!) has made a cheat sheet which breaks it all down, which you can read here.

What issues might feature in the debate?

These are some of the key themes from the campaign that have emerged so far:

• Debate over what a national anti-corruption watchdog would look like, and whether voters even care
• Katherine Deves, Mr Morrison’s pick for the seat of Warringah, has come under intense scrutiny and apologised repeatedly for a series of social media posts in which she made controversial comments about transgender people
• There have been gaffes. Mr Albanese couldn’t name the unemployment rate on the first day of the campaign, while Mr Morrison said he “misspoke” when he got details of the unemployment benefit wrong
• The Coalition was quick to jump on Mr Albanese’s language on immigration and offshore detention
• Scare campaigns have emerged early. Mr Morrison has turned to the decade-old issue of mining and carbon taxes. Labor is promoting a spurious claim that the Coalition intends to put all age pension payments onto cashless debit cards.

This will be a first for Albanese, but not Morrison

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is no stranger to leaders’ debates.

He took part in three during the 2019 campaign against then Labor leader Bill Shorten.

So tonight will be a milestone for Anthony Albanese.

Three years ago, a leaders’ debate in Brisbane provided one of the moments of the 2019 campaign.

Then Labor leader Bill Shorten labelled Scott Morrison a “space invader”, after the latter encroached on his personal space whilst goading Shorten on his campaign policies.

There had been a proposal to launch a national debates commission, similar to what is in place in the United States, to formalise debate arrangements during Australian campaigns.

However, that fell over shortly before the election was called.

In 2019, there were three leader’s debates – in Brisbane, Perth and Canberra.

Here’s what you need to know about tonight’s leaders’ debate

• Prime Minister Scott Morrison will go head-to-head in a debate with Labor leader Anthony Albanese in Brisbane
• Officially named the Sky News-Courier Mail People’s Forum, Sky’s political reporter Kieran Gilbert will moderate the debate
• The two leaders will face questions from a group of 100 undecided voters, Sky News says
• It all starts at 7pm AEST and will be televised on Sky News

Welcome to the first leaders’ debate of the 2022 federal election!

I’m Jessica Riga and I’ll be joined by my Canberra-based colleague Nicholas McElroy to bring you the latest updates from the first debate between Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese. 

The debate, a voters’ forum happening in Brisbane, is due to start at 7pm AEST.
