The big problem with pandemic migration

Rolling hills, beaches that stretch forever and cheaper coffee — we understand why people have moved from the city down to the South Coast. But amidst what’s been described as the “pandemic migration”, there’s a little bit of a problem.

Actually it’s a big problem. There’s nowhere for people to liveWoonona teen prodigy makes AFLW history

Paul Knight resigns from land council: After six years in the job, Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council chief executive Paul Knight has announced he’s stepping down from the role. The council’s board chair, Jade Kennedy, said he has been a strong leader who has helped the organisation grow and build a strong presence in the culture and heritage sphere. Uncle Ivan Simon has been named interim boss until a permanent replacement is found.

Native logging set to continue: Despite a damning report from the Natural Resources Commission last year, NSW Forestry corporation is in negotiations to extend native forest logging contracts. The major concerns are the effects logging is having on the flora and fauna in native forests, post-bushfires. In budget estimates this week, NSW Forestry Minister Dugald Saunders confirmed there are plans to renew contracts.

Flood clean-up continues: Thankfully the water has receded, but the clean-up for residents around the St Georges Basin area is continuing. The Sussex Inlet Business Chamber says it would like to see some action taken to better prepare residents for future flooding.

Forty Five degree tree rule on the agenda again: We’ve lost count of the times this debate has come up at council, but this week it has been put to bed. Councillors voted to reaffirm the policy that allows trees to be removed by a property owner without council approval, where it is within 45 degrees of a building. Debate over the policy reignited after Shoalhaven mayor Amanda Findley put forward a mayoral minute to remove it a few weeks ago.

Wollongong Emergency Family Housing has secured state government funds to build 15 apartments in Unanderra by the end of 2023.Chief executive Mandy Booker welcomed the funding, but admitted it does little to shorten the 10-year waiting list for people seeking social housing.

What happened to the nuclear waste that arrived last week? It caused a bit of a stir when it arrived in Port Kembla this week. A large convoy transported it through the streets of Wollongong in the dead of night. Australian nuclear agency ANSTO says the waste brought back from the UK, passing through Port Kembla and Wollongong this week, will be stored at Lucas Heights until a permanent storage facility opened. It has been set in molten glass and locked in steel canisters.

The weekend weather is looking like a chance of rain, but with mild temperatures. You know what that means though. There is also a chance it won’t be raining too! If we were a betting organisation (which we are absolutely not) we’d say Sunday is the pick of days to put your washing on the line.
