#AceDailyNews here’s todays Newspaper Headlines: Meltdown’ in Downing Street: The Guardian reports Ms Mirza wrote a “stinging” resignation letter to Mr Johnson, accusing him of “scurrilous” behaviour when he “falsely linked” Sir Keir Starmer to the failure to prosecute paedophile Jimmy Savile while the Labour leader was director of public prosecutions. The paper says her departure came out of the blue, but the three other aides to leave were as a result of them being “implicated” in the response to the ‘Partygate’ scandal.

Living standards crisis as the The papers also focuses on the “worst crunch” facing people in 32 years over the cost of living, with families set to be an average of £2,417 worse off this year as a result

The i also focuses on the exodus of the PM’s senior aides, describing Ms Mirza’s departure as a walking out “in disgust” and issuing a public rebuke to Mr Johnson. The paper describes the departures of three other senior advisors as a “night of drama” amid police investigation into lockdown parties and “criticism of their conduct”.

Rishi Sunak has “knifed” Mr Johnson on what the Sun has dubbed “black Thursday”, as the chancellor criticises the PM for his Savile remarks and had a “dig” over the parties in No 10.

Many other papers are also leading with the growing cost of living crisis. The Metro describes the combination of rising energy prices, rising interest rates, food bills, the increase to inflation and the impending National Insurance increase as a “perfect storm”. The paper says Chancellor Rishi Sunak has launched a £9bn “rescue package” to help more than 22 million households with their energy bills.

The Times reports the Bank of England has warned people’s take-home pay will fall by five times the amount it did during the 2008 financial crisis, constituting the “worst hit to real incomes” since records began in 1990. The paper says the chancellor admitted Britain will have to get used to higher energy prices in the future, while announcing his rescue package of bill loans and council tax rebate.

“They’re all laughing” headlines the Daily Mirror, with the paper reporting “mega-rich Rishi Sunak and his wealthy colleagues had plenty of fun” in the Commons, despite the “worst squeeze” on people’s finances in decades. The paper adds Labour’s shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves was “furious” and she said the chancellor’s answer to people worried about turning their heating on was to “laugh in their faces.”

The Financial Times reports the Bank of England says households face the “worst squeeze” on their finances for 30 years. Interest rates have been doubled by the bank to 0.5% to head off rising prices, as it also warns inflation is set to rise to 7.5%, the paper says

“Tighten your belts” is the advice from the Daily Express, amid the escalating cost of living crisis. The paper says Mr Sunak “attempted to ease the grim reality” of the fall in living standards, adding he plans to help millions as “energy bills soar and interest rates rise”.

“The big squeeze” is the headline in the Telegraph, reporting that senior cabinet ministers are urging Prime Minister Boris Johnson to “rethink net zero” plans as the “cost of living crisis bites”. The paper adds several ministers are concerned the speed of a switch to renewable energy is “too fast and increasing costs for consumers”.

Focusing on a different cash crisis, the Daily Star reports on the “snack crisis” looming after a hack of KP Snacks. The paper says cyber criminals have threatened the supplies of Nik Naks, Hula Hoops and KP Nuts, concluding “can 2022 get any weirder?”

The rises in energy bills and interest rates, as well as the Downing Street resignations, dominate the front pages. 

The Sun brings both stories together – describing the squeeze on family finances as the worst crunch in 32 years and the Downing Street resignations as a ‘partygate’ bloodbath. Its headline reads: “Ouch!”

“Meltdown in Downing Street” leads the Daily Mail, above a close-up picture of Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the words: “Will the last one to leave please turn out the lights”. 

The i leads with: “Johnson’s top team quits No 10 en masse”, while the Guardian says the fallout from the Downing Street party scandal has continued to shake his hold on government. 

According to the Times, two cabinet ministers have questioned whether the PM can survive. “It feels like the end, it’s all falling apart. It’s 50/50 in my view at the moment”, one is quoted as saying. 

The Telegraph says Tory whips are understood to be braced for ministerial resignations, with Solicitor General Alex Chalk identified by a government source as someone who could quit because of the handling of partygate. A source close to Mr Chalk tells the Times he has no plans to resign – and the paper reports that Mr Johnson had to persuade him not to quit earlier this week. 

“The big squeeze” is the lead in the Telegraph, which says cabinet ministers are increasingly uneasy about Downing Street’s focus on its pledge to cut Britain’s carbon emissions to zero by 2050. One minister tells the paper the UK “should not be running towards net zero so aggressively”. Another says: “The priority should be the cost of living – 2050 is a long way away and our own gas is a valuable transition fuel in the meantime”.

Publishing part of its leader column on the front page, the Telegraph also lays the blame for the energy crisis on government policies. The paper says whether it’s the stampede to net zero, the Climate Change Act, the energy price cap, the botched regulation of suppliers or the failure to take critical decisions when they were needed, this is a home-grown crisis.

In other leader columns, Chancellor Rishi Sunak comes under fire for his measures to help struggling households with their bills. The Sun gives qualified support for the measures, but says it’s dispiriting to see a Tory government with a huge majority shun the far more effective solution – tax cuts, to ease hardship and help the economy grow. 

The Mirror would have preferred cutting VAT on energy bills and putting a windfall tax on the oil and gas giants.

Finally, a number of papers report on a campaign to give the UK an extra public holiday from next year. 

The Telegraph says the “Thank Holiday” would be in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, but also in recognition of the millions of people who have stepped up to serve their communities during the pandemic. 

The Daily Express says the idea has already garnered mass support, offering its own backing for the holiday – adding it would give us all something to cheer about.
